Most size guides give you a number of liters and leave you to imagine it. If you're trying to settle the size of a rucksack — ours or anyone else's — that number is the wrong place to start. That doesn't work, for a reason worth understanding before you compare any two backpacks.

What "Liters" Actually Measures — and Why It Isn't Comparable

There is no enforced standard for how backpack capacity is measured.

Some makers measure only the main compartment. Some include every pocket. Some measure the bag stuffed to its absolute limit; some measure it packed to a shape you'd actually carry. A soft-sided bag can be quoted at whatever volume it reaches when overstuffed, while a structured bag that holds its shape gets measured at the shape it holds.

The consequence: a 23L from one brand can hold more than a 30L from another, and neither is lying. The number is a rough class indicator, not a specification.

Two things are more informative than the liter figure:

External dimensions. Height × width × depth is measurable and comparable across brands. If a bag has to fit under an airline seat or in a locker, this is the only number that matters.

The largest flat thing it takes. For most people that's a laptop. A bag's usable size is often limited by the longest rigid object it accepts, not by its volume.

Which One You Want

Choose the smaller size if:

• It's a daily commute bag — laptop, lunch, a layer, and that's the list
• You'd rather carry a full small bag than a half-empty large one (a partly-filled canvas rucksack sags and rides badly)
• You're often on public transport, where depth is what makes a bag antisocial
• You want it as a daypack for walks rather than overnights

Choose the larger size if:

• You regularly carry a change of clothes — gym, office-then-elsewhere, a night away
• You want one bag for a weekend rather than a bag plus a holdall
• You carry bulky soft items: a jacket, a camera bag, sports kit
• You'd rather have the space unused most days than be repacking on the days you need it

The tie-breaker most people get wrong: a bag that is always full is more comfortable than a bag that is usually half empty. Canvas has structure but it isn't a frame — an under-filled bag loses its shape and sits away from your back. If you'd be filling the larger size twice a month, buy the smaller one.

What If You Want Something Smaller?

Below the 23 L class the category changes character rather than just shrinking. A small knapsack or a mini canvas backpack — roughly 10–18 L — stops being a work bag and becomes a day bag: a wallet, a phone, a bottle, maybe a thin notebook. If what you actually need is a canvas notebook bag for a laptop and nothing else, a satchel is usually a better answer than a small rucksack, because you can get into it without taking it off.

The other common request is a day rucksack for travel. Daypacks for travel are typically 18–25 L, which the Small covers comfortably — the reason people reach for something bigger is almost always shoes.

Does It Fit a 17" Laptop?

Both sizes work as a canvas laptop backpack, but "fits a 17-inch laptop" is a claim worth interrogating. A note on laptop fit generally, because the spec is often quoted misleadingly. A sleeve rated for a screen size assumes a machine of typical thickness and bezel. A thick gaming laptop of the same nominal size may not go in. If your machine is unusual, compare its actual dimensions with the bag's internal sleeve dimensions rather than the marketing size.

Also worth checking: whether the laptop sleeve is padded at the base or stops short of it. A sleeve that ends above the bottom of the bag protects the machine when you set the bag down; one that runs to the base doesn't.

For a day walk, a commute, a city, or a weekend, that's the right trade: you get a bag that survives being dragged across rough surfaces and looks better every year. For carrying serious weight uphill over multiple days, it isn't, and no amount of capacity changes that.
