Military Style Canvas Rucksacks
Top-loading rucksacks in the military pattern, and the packs we point hikers at. The 21-litre Ranger Military Rucksack is the compact one, 18 inches tall and cut close to the spine. The Ranger Canvas Backpack runs 23 and 30 litres under a drawstring and flap. Heavy washed cotton, brass fittings, no camouflage print on either. Both are civilian packs, not surplus.
Frequently asked questions
Are these military surplus bags?
No. They are civilian rucksacks cut in the military pattern — top-loading under a flap, external pockets, brass fittings — with no camouflage, no MOLLE webbing and no issue markings.
Which size for a day hike, and which for an overnight?
The 21-litre Ranger Military Rucksack covers a day out with a layer, lunch and water. The 30-litre Ranger takes a compressed sleeping bag on top of that. The 23-litre sits between the two and is the usual everyday choice.
Do they have a hip belt or an internal frame?
Neither. Both are frameless top-loaders carried entirely on the shoulders, which puts the comfortable ceiling at roughly 10 kg.
