Commuting bags fail in specific ways. They are too deep, so things settle at the bottom out of reach. They have one compartment, so a laptop rides against a water bottle. Or they are so large that they invite carrying things nobody needs on a train.

The Commuter answers the first problem with a 15.7 × 4.3 × 11.3-inch body — wide and shallow rather than deep — and 13 litres split across a main compartment with located pockets, including room for a 15.6-inch machine. The Cadet answers the third by being deliberately small: 5.6 litres, 1.1 lbs, 11.2 inches wide. It takes a tablet, a notebook and a charger and refuses anything more.

Upright versus flap-over

Two shapes here do different jobs. The flap-over bags — Commuter, Dispatch, Boho — open across the full width, which suits paper and laptops. The upright satchels — the 6-litre Ranger Satchel and the Ridge — are taller than they are wide, with organiser pockets that keep pens, cards and a phone separated rather than pooled. If your commute involves taking one specific thing out on a moving train, the upright shape wins.

Materials and what they cost you

The Ranger Satchel and Ridge use 16 oz high-density canvas with a cotton woven lining — heavier cloth, and it shows in a bag that keeps its shape unloaded. The Boho layers brass accents and a full-grain leather trim over frayed-edge washed canvas. The Dispatch is the plainest and the cheapest at $38.29, with no leather at all. Every strap here adjusts to four feet, which is enough length to sit crossbody over outerwear.
